E.coli is a bacterial infection that grows in the gut and excrement of animals. Some strands of the E.coli infection are harmless and can live in the intestines of humans and animals without any adverse effects. However, other strands have the potential to cause severe discomfort and disease. There are numerous different ways that the infection can be caused in an individual. E.coli can be contracted from infected animals or water that has been used by them, especially if it has come into contact with animal faeces. The infection can be spread by interacting with someone who is infected and failing to wash hands and surfaces afterwards. Undercooked meat and vegetables can also spread the bacteria.
Ecoli Sickness - What are the symptoms?
Symptoms of E.coli are diarrhoea, stomach cramps and fever and around half of people will experience bloody diarrhoea. This can occur anytime between 1 and 14 days after contamination, but people will usually suffer from symptoms 3 to 4 days afterwards, which usually last for 2 weeks. Drinking fluids is important but no formal medical treatment is needed. A small number of sufferers, typically children under 5 years old, can go onto develop haemolytic uraemic syndrome which can be very serious and lead to kidney failure.
