Cryptosporidium is a type of intestinal infection caused by a parasite that thrives in unsanitary conditions. The infection can cause gastroenteritis which can have particularly debilitating symptoms such as diarrhoea and vomiting. It is one of the most common forms of holiday illness in Tunisia because the infection usually stems from unhygienic swimming pools. The water can become contaminated by faecal matter and if the pool is not cleaned properly this can be hazardous. If contaminated water is consumed then the infection can be contracted. If food is prepared with unsanitary water then this can also cause cryptosporidium.
