Holiday Illness & Sickness in Egypt
If you ask someone to tell you three facts about Egypt, there’s a strong chance that they’ll mention the Nile, Pyramids or Pharaohs; Egypt is bursting at the seams with historical and cultural significance and even if you’ve never stepped foot in the country, Egypt is difficult to miss. From the beautiful deserts with their hot springs, mammoth Pyramid structures and breath-taking landscapes to the hustle and bustle of Cairo and its traditional Islamic architecture.
Egypt has some specific risks of illness that holiday-makers have fallen foul of. Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are common illnesses due to the lack of shade and access to water in many parts of Egypt; air-con, bottled water and wearing suitable clothing is advised. In addition to this, there have been reported problems of illnesses due to unsanitary conditions in all-inclusive resorts.
Where there has been a lack of hygiene and unsanitary conditions in the food preparation areas of hotels, there has also been reported cases of typhoid, and also schistosomiasis in freshwater.
Tuberculosis is also common in Egypt which can be spread through dairy products such as milk.
